History of Medical Scrubs for Women

Before we get to the luxurious scrubs of GreenCloud Apparel we should go through the history of medical scrubs, which began in the twentieth century. In the early 1900s, nurses would wear uniforms similar to nuns’ habits, with the matching veil. That’s when medical professionals

started to see the importance of a clean environment to perform their medical procedures. Some other key points in medical uniform history are:

The 1918 Flu Pandemic

During the pandemic, doctors started wearing masks for protection from the infection. Back then, masks were a little different, and the medical uniforms for women, mainly old nurse’ uniforms, looked like servant uniforms because they were aprons worn over dresses. The design of the nurse’s caps throughout the period helped to differentiate between the two positions.

The 1940s

This is when awareness of wound infection and the need for sanitized operating rooms began to thrive. Medical uniforms received significant changes after this. Nursing uniforms were dresses and caps while doctors were wearing lab coats. The protection level of the uniforms was now a factor in their day-to-day work life.

The 1950s-60s

At this point, medical scrubs were a regular thing within the operating rooms. They were bright white to demonstrate cleanliness, but so was the operating room. So this began to cause a strain on the medical staffs’ eyes. It was after figuring out it was the uniforms that scrubs of many different colors started to show up.
